You can be any character in the world…as long as you’re white.
- They can never find ethnic actors…until they need maids, slaves, thugs, victims, extras, dropouts, villains. We don’t even get to tell our own cultural stories.
- Yet there will never be a black James Bond.
I just wanna laugh at how RDJ’s character from Tropic Thunder is in this, because that is literally the epitome of commentary on this very post.
His character, if you have not seen the movie, is actually an “Australian born actor” named Kirk Lazarus who is literally the most white skinned blonde and blue-eyed man in the movie, and he goes through a huge cosmetic surgery to change his complexion JUST for a particular role in the movie that’s being made.. in the movie itself.
There IS an actual African American (or POC if you wanna get all technical) actor in Tropic Thuner movie who is meant to contradict the actual stereotype of the “typical black character” and also be a means of opposing RDJ’s incredibly stereotyped character’s character. He is also adorable and his name is Brandon T. Jackson.
There are also plenty of other POC in the movie, which was filmed in Hawaii, etcetc.
So yeah, before you dismiss Tropic Thunder for it’s fart jokes and Ben Stiller humor, it’s actually a really smart movie. Don’t diss it just because all you see is RDJ painted brown. Watch it.
Watch it to see what they did to Tom Cruise.
